WHP
Hats of to Mr. Brunel for making the view of history available to folks speeding by through the graces of modern technology. YOu are right, of course, being really present and touching them, breathing the air around these ancient horses is by far the best way to experience them.
I've always loved the Marlborough Horse.

Train travellers can see the Uffington White Horse on a clear day, a few miles south of the high seed line from London to Bristol. Many are the times that I have sped by at 125mph and looked out at the prehistoric shape. The line curves gently around the hill, and it seems as if the engineer who laid out the line, Isambard Brunel, might have used White Horse Hill as a surveying point.

There are more white horses to be seen on http://wiltshirewhitehorses.org.uk/index.html. They are fascinating artefacts to visit, walk up to, even touch.
