Absolutely. The fuller your bag of "tricks", the better your chance of success. You can never have too many options, especially with horses.

As I wrote on another blog:
in my own experiences there have been times that I have started out using a method and tweaked it to better suit the situation. Then later, I have seen the same method I “tweaked” to being shown in a training video or written about in a training book, and here I thought I had invented it. Ha, ha.
Also, good horse trainers are always seeking to learn and grow and find a better way, why should their students not? It is entirely possible that a student of Parelli could tweak a method to better suit them and then find the same method included in a revised or the next Parelli DVD. Never stagnate and latch onto a method as the only way

Hi Jane

Not only am I delighted that you are enjoying the link, and do I NOT mind your passing along the link, but I thank you for doing so.

4H&H, Welcome! I think you make a very valid point--that you take what you need and leave the rest. I am no real fan of a "brand" of horsemanship, but I do think there is a danger in cherrypicking in any discipline before you have a solid base of knowledge.
There is a reason the ancient disciplines ask you to apprentice and even learn in a residential environment. This is so you absorb every bit of knowledge you can before striking out on your own and either embellishing or paring it down. Until you have mastered the basics of something, how can you make changes with any authority or safety?
Just a devil's advocate-type thought, but I think there is something to learn from martial arts schools and other disciplines such as ballet that do things the old way. I think this is the crux of the worry I have with cherrypicking. I don't mean to say that you can't think for yourself and question as you go, but --forgive the naughty pun--a savvy student wait a bit before discarding methods until after having mastered the entire gestalt.
We ARE all as smart as Linda and Pat, and common sense is an equal opportunity part of intelligence--but experience with horsemanship is not. There is nothing wrong with benefitting from their experience, learning as much as possible from it, and deciding what to discard after you feel secure.

As for the Parelli’s, what amazes me is that anyone will follow something fanticlly (including religions and politics) without questioning everythng alont the way. When I was learning marial arts the one thing I did learn is that you take what is good and useful for yourself from every disipline. One should never ever ever stop thinking for oneself. Does it make sense to you? Does it work for you? If it does, use it. If it doesn’t, discard it. You are just as smart as everyone else. You are just as smart as Linda or Pat. It may be that you just haven’t noticed or been introduced to some of the ideas they or anyone else is presenting.

Amen, well said.

Hi Muddy
Welcome. It's nice to see you here.
If you object to paying what the Parellis charge for a rope halter and lead rope, there are other outlets for quality merchandise, but you really really want one, you will have to do a little research. I can recommend at least one.

I have always wondered why on earth they don't wear helmets. It makes absolutely no sense. I don't care how safe your horse is. If your jumping picnic tables, bareback in a giant arena with hundreds of viewers and several other horses, ANYTHING could go wrong. I respect what Parelli has accomplished- I myself follow a lot of his methods (or if you'd go back a little further, Tom Durrance) when I am at a loss- but he is very much a jerk. If He truly wanted to help horses and their riders he would not chage $200 for a halter and lead rope./

Thank you Kim. Colonel Carde I Judge, Olympic coach and Head Rider of the Cadre Noir for many years signed. So did Walter Zettl. We are seeing vets, breeders, riders, trainers signing. There are many more to come I hope so that the FEI sees that it is not just happy hackers signing but also professionals who understand the Rules and the Body of the horse.

I burst out laughing on #3. I am so sorry. I didn't know cake compulsion/obsession was contagious! I'm always asking my brain "why couldn't it be, you know, *apples*?" It says "because cake is better."

You got the beautiful blogger award for being a "beautiful blogger": writing from your heart, about your thoughts and passions, and investigating interesting avenues and sharing. Though I must say, your actual blog IS beautiful. Love the change.

Do you write whatever you want? I'm really serious.
I don't.
I wish I had the intellectual clout to get a way with it.
Then I would. For real.

Yay Lori
You write your blog! You take fabulous photos of treasured and disappearing Americana, as you live it. You make me homesick.
That's why you get the award.
And your blog is purty.
